Teeth Whitening in Ottawa

Teeth whitening is a simple process that fixes decolorization of enamel and dentin in your natural teeth. We use a peroxide-based gel retained in a custom-fitted appliance. You can wear it throughout the day and while you sleep.

Common causes of discoloring include:

  • Aging
  • Tobacco staings
  • Trauma
  • Excessive fluoride
  • Nerve degeneration
  • Coffee, tea, cola

Some types of stains will require other methods. For instance, antibiotic and nerve degeneration stains require other forms of treatment. However, your teeth will be whiter than before regardless of what procedure we use.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does teeth whitening last?

This depends on the patient’s habits. A patient who follows a healthy diet, avoids teeth staining foods and drinks, doesn’t smoke, and practices good dental hygiene will see their teeth whitening last longer.
In-office teeth whitening results can last several months to a year based on these factors. To protect tooth enamel and gums, it isn’t recommended to have in-office whitening more than once a year. To maintain whitening results, take-home whitening trays and bleach can be provided.

Do I have to do anything special after teeth whitening?

For at least 48 hours after receiving teeth whitening, avoid foods and drinks that can stain teeth such as coffee, tea, red wine, berries, or foods with artificial colours. Avoid smoking for as long as possible. This will ensure the best and longest lasting results.

Do I have to do anything special before teeth whitening?

In most cases, there isn’t anything special that needs to be done before a teeth whitening procedure. Keep in mind that teeth whitening has the best results on clean teeth that are free of plaque and tartar. That’s why it is best to have teeth whitening done soon after a dental cleaning. If you have issues with sensitive teeth, it is best to have a consultation appointment with your dental professional two weeks before getting teeth whitening in order to pick up a specially formulated toothpaste to treat the sensitivity.

Does teeth whitening hurt?

Whitening solutions we use have desensitizing additive, however, it is possible to experience some sensitivity in the teeth and gums after the whitening procedure. Speak with your dental professional about ways to avoid sensitivity before receiving teeth whitening. They can provide you with options to take before, during and after treatment that will limit and reduce sensitivity.

How does teeth whitening work?

Teeth stains will appear when coloured molecules come into contact with plaque, tartar and the surface of the teeth and stick to them. Dental cleanings are meant to remove plaque and tartar, but stains can still appear within the enamel due to it’s honeycomb like structure. The bleaching solution that we use for teeth whitening combines with oxygen in the air and carbon in the enamel structure to remove the molecules that are causing the stains to appear.
