Denture FAQ: Facts, Myths, Truths & Misperceptions

Getting dentures is a major adjustment. It’s not a small step in one’s life. Dentures are also something that prompts a lot of questions, from natural curiosity to genuine concern. For these reasons, we have compiled the most commonly asked questions about dentures in Ottawa.

How Much do Dentures Cost?

For many people, getting dentures can be an intimidating process. This question, however, has a wide range of answers. The cost of dentures depends on the materials being used, as well as the techniques used by your dentist. The condition of your teeth, gum and bone will also make the treatment easier or harder and, therefore, may result in different costs.

What About Denture Repairs?

Dental procedures and costs vary widely based on many factors, like, for example, the condition of your mouth. The best thing you can do in this case is to return to the prosthodontist who made your appliances.  Although they might seem easy to repair, there is a chance that your denture is too old to repair and needs to be replaced by a new one.

What Types of Dentures Are There?

The dentures that replace all the teeth are called complete dentures, while those that replace only some of the teeth are known as partial dentures. These last ones attach to the remaining teeth but also rest on the gum and bone like the complete appliances.

How Long Before the Swelling Goes Down?

Pain after extraction and denture placement is common and will subside once healing is complete and your appliances are finally in place. During the process, you should visit your dentist regularly, in order to get certain adjustments done. You will feel discomfort for a minimum of two to ten months.

Can I Whiten My Dentures?

It’s not advisable to whiten your appliances the same way you would whiten your natural teeth, as they are made of different materials. However, in order to minimize staining, make sure you clean your dentures properly every day to remove plaque and food deposits. Remember not to brush your teeth with normal toothpaste, since it might harm your dentures.

Can I Wear My Dentures at Night?

Although they are not meant to be 24h a day in your mouth, you can wear them at night if you have a reason to do so. However, you should give your bone and gums the chance to relax at some point. The best you can do is clean them before going to sleep and soak them in water.

Can I Eat Normally?

Once you are used to your dentures, you should be able to eat normally, but it may take more time when it comes to hard or sticky foods. A small amount of adhesive will help your dentures hold in place while you get used to your new appliances. Bear in mind: dentures and chewing gum do not generally work well together.

Will A Partial Denture’s Colour Match My Remaining Teeth?

Yes. Prosthodontists are highly trained in the art of colour and shade matching. We can produce a match to your remaining natural teeth.
